Most Famous Coach
Paul William Bryant, known as “Bear” Bryant joined the Crimson Tide football program in December 1957. Prior to that he was head coach at Texas A&M. In his fourth season with the Crimson Tide, Bryant led the team to their 6th national championship. This was his first bowl victory with the team.
Bryant was beloved by everyone he encountered, those in and around Alabama plus the entire southeastern United States, but especially loved by football coaches all across the country. During his time at Alabama, he led them to a 232-46-9 record. His accomplishments totaled 6 national championships, 13 SEC titles, 24 bowl games and winning 12 of them. In his 25 seasons with the Crimson Tide, he led the team to 24 bowl appearances in a row, which is astounding! When he retired, Bryant had achieved a record 323 NCAA win.
The most important rivalry of the Alabama Crimson Tide is with Alabama’s Auburn University. This is thought to be among the most hard-fought sports rivalries in the entire country. The Alabama/Auburn football game is now known as the “Iron Bowl.” And the game’s outcome determines the “bragging rights” of the entire state until the following match up. Despite this hot in-state rivalry, Bear Bryant was more determined to defeat his rivals directly to the north, specifically the Tennessee Volunteers. Another hard-fought SEC Western Division rivalry occurs every year between Alabama and Louisiana State University’s Tigers.
